Lifegate began as a vision in 1989. Reverend Spiller asked the congregation if they were interested in setting up a ministry to help the needy in our community. Receiving a positive response, a task force consisting of five people was formed. They traveled to Montgomery to observe a ministry like this, already in place and functioning at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church. That visit prompted another, this time to a local church, Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, where the group attended a workshop to learn how Dauphin Way ministers to the needy through Society of St. Stephens. At that point a committee was put in place consisting of Joy Macklem and Bob McBroom. They made decisions on how and what this ministry should do and what its goals should be. By 1990 the ministry had begun, with a few volunteers working from the educational building. Since then it has grown tremendously to include a slate of officers and approximately 35 volunteers.
