Pastoral Care Ministries
Pastoral Care
Calling, Caring, Consolation, Compassion for the Family of God
Celebrate Recovery
CUMC has a ministry to aid in the recovery of people who are affected by destructive habits. This ministry is based on the Christ-centered program founded by Saddleback Church. Click here for more information.
Clergy and Staff Hospital Visitation
The Pastors and Staff visit the sick that are known to us in area hospitals each week, Monday through Friday. It is very important for our members to indicate their church preference upon admission to the hospital in order for us to know of your hospitalization. We very much want to care for you, so please call Kim Pratt at (251)342-0462, ext. 231 to inform us.
Health Care Ministry
The Health Care Ministry is composed of members of our congregation that are health care providers and laity who volunteer their time and/or resources to help the congregation of CUMC and the community achieve optimal health and well-being. This is attained with blood drives, immunization clinics, skin cancer screenings, glucose screenings, blood pressure screening, CPR certifications, first aid kits on campus, first aid rooms as scheduled events, and health tips in the church's monthly newsletter. If you are interested in joining the team, please call Kim Pratt at (251)342-0462.
Ministry to the Bereaved
Our pastors are on call to care, comfort, offer consolation and compassion to the dying and their families. They also are available for assistance with funerals. There are two lay ministries within the church, Barnabas and Good Samaritans which offer assistance and encouragement during time of grief. Good Samaritans often assist families with a prepared meal given by lay persons in the church.
Grief Share
The death of a spouse, child, family member or friend is devastating. The grieving process can be lengthy and intense, and even mature Christians need on-going comfort and encouragement during the grieving period. We are here for you. If you need to talk to someone, please call Meribeth Richardson at (251)649-7373.
Family Care & Counseling
Many life circumstances lead a person or family into the process of counseling. The ultimate therapeutic goal of growth, however, is universal. Growth involves the process of becoming more of the person God intends for us to be. For this reason, our Counseling Ministry mission at Christ United Methodist Church is to promote growth by offering Christian-based support, encouragement, training and counsel, primarily for issues related to marriage and family. The caring and qualified members of our Counseling Ministry Team believe in the importance of utilizing counseling theory as well as theology and scripture as part of therapy. Minimal fees are also important for establishing investment and responsibility in the counseling process. For further information or to schedule an appointment with one of our marriage and family therapists, please call our church office at (251)342-0462, ext. 228, or ask for the Counseling Ministry.
Stephen Ministry
This is a lay ministry which is offered to the congregation. Stephen Ministers provide a needed one-on-one support system to individuals who may be working through grief (death, divorce, separation, sickness or other difficulties). Stephen Ministers receive fifty hours of training to become care givers as well as continuing education and supervision throughout the year. Call Donna Alexander at (251)342-0462, ext. 225 for more information about receiving care from a Stephen Minister or how to become a Stephen Minister.
Intercessory Prayer
The place of intercessory prayer in one's recovery or daily walk cannot be overstated.
James 5:16 exhorts us to "pray for each other that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results."
Christ Church has many intercessors and a number of prayer groups. To add a name to the prayer list, call Kim Pratt at the church (251)342-0462, ext. 231.
During the closing hymn of the three Sunday morning services, you are welcome to come to the altar for a time of prayer. The wings of the altar (far ends) are reserved for prayer. If you desire someone to pray with you, please speak to the pastor. A special service of healing is conducted regularly and is announced in the bulletin. Communion is served at all services on the first Sunday of each month.
LifeGate
Whoever Is Kind To The Needy Honors God
The Lifegate Ministry's purpose is to aid church members and non-members in crisis situations; helping with utilities (with priority on elderly and/or disabled), rent, medicine, food, and children's clothing.*
Lifegate began as a vision in 1989. Reverend Spiller asked the congregation if they were interested in setting up a ministry to help the needy in our community. Receiving a positive response, a task force consisting of five people was formed. They traveled to Montgomery to observe a ministry like this, already in place and functioning at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church. That visit prompted another, this time to a local church, Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, where the group attended a workshop to learn how Dauphin Way ministers to the needy through Society of St. Stephens. At that point a committee was put in place consisting of Joy Macklem and Bob McBroom. They made decisions on how and what this ministry should do and what its goals should be. By 1990 the ministry had begun, with a few volunteers working from the educational building. Since then it has grown tremendously to include a slate of officers and approximately 35 volunteers.
*Other help is available, based on individual circumstances.
Seniors Ministry
The Senior Adult Ministry at Christ Church has something for everyone. We strive to praise God together, fellowship together, and be in service to all in our community. We are so blessed to have a large number of senior adults in our church, each with an individual gift, talent, or need. Our goals are to provide spiritual nourishment, care, fun, fellowship and worship opportunities to all senior adult members and guests.
Senior adults participate and serve in various areas of the church. Some of these areas include, but are not limited to, the Administrative Board, Major Committees, Sunday School Teachers, The Choir, Ushers, UMW Circles, and Lay Pastors. Many opportunities exist that are particularly designed with senior adults in mind.
The Senior Adult Committee meets the first Thursday of each month to determine and plan the monthly calendar including events for Pairs and Spares.
Connection Classes. Senior Sunday Morning Connection classes currently offered are the Seekers - Room 203, The Living Word - Room 202, Searchers - Room 115, and Pairs and Spares Bible Study in the Parlor. These classes offer some interesting and diverse programs which enlighten and stimulate the minds of its members. Classes are at 9:15 a.m.
The Senior Adult Bus Ministry at CUMC allows residents of Somerby, AHEPA (Hillcrest & Cottage Hill), and Gordon Oaks the opportunity to attend church services along with special church functions. Please contact Gerry Keen at (251)633-0168.
Assisted Living Ministry. We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in doing a Worship service or Bible study at local assisted living facilities. For seniors life can be difficult. Freedom to attend Worship services is restricted by physical limitations. You can help to bring the Church to them. Think about it, Pray about it. If you would like more information, please call Rev. Ed Sells at (251)342-0462, ext. 262.
The objective of the Senior Adult Ministry is to provide spiritual nourishment, special needs of our visitors and members, including our local communities. For any other questions or if you need information or assistance, please call Kim Pratt at (251)342-0462, ext 231.
